So You Want to Play the Flute?

Although Ron Burgundy made it look easy, learning to play the flute is actually one of the most difficult instruments to learn. However, in my opinion, the juice is worth the squeeze. In order to produce the beautifully melodic music of the flute, one must learn the disciplines of patience and posture.  As they say, “failing to prepare is preparing to fail.” Just like any sport, repetitive practice of the fundamentals is essential for success. I would highly suggest seeking private instruction, especially when starting out. However, if you are confident that you are able to learn through simple observation, there are many instructional videos on the Internet that are sufficient for learning to play. (Most people require some type of hands-on instruction so do not feel discouraged if you attempt to learn via YouTube and end up crying tears of frustration... I know I did.) Lastly, remember that choosing the correct flute is also very important. There are many resources online you can research before purchasing your first one. Similar to Harry Potter’s trip to Ollivanders for a wand, they say that a musician does not choose a flute; rather a flute chooses a musician.
